Fire badly damages Elgin home on Aldine Street

An Elgin house was badly damaged in a Wednesday evening fire, officials said.

Firefighters arrived about 6:50 p.m. to find flames coming out several first-floor windows of a two-story home in the 200 block of North Aldine Street, an Elgin Fire Department report said.

The residents were able to get out of the house unharmed, and firefighters needed 20 minutes to get the fire under control, the report said.

Extensive fire and smoke damage made the house uninhabitable. Preliminary damage estimates are in excess of $170,000, the report said.

An initial investigation indicates an electrical problem may have been the cause, the report said.
