Six people were injured, at least one of them seriously, Tuesday afternoon when stairs and a porch collapsed in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, according to authorities.
Around 2:50 p.m. in the first block of South Lavergne Avenue, south of Madison Street, six people — two males and four females — were on the second floor of a porch when it collapsed, police said. Ages and identities of those injured were not available, police said. Stairs to the porch failed while people were on them, according to the Fire Department.

Photos from the scene showed what appeared to be a timber-construction apartment building back porch, with wooden planks that had been stairs leaning in all directions on one flight of stairs.
The six people were taken to area hospitals, according to police and fire officials. Those injured included two young people, according to the Fire Department. Of those injured, one person was in serious-to-critical condition and the others were in fair-to-serious condition, according to the Fire Department.
