Dear Dr. June,
I have a very rewarding job where I help young adults get their lives on track. I am passionate about what I do and absolutely love it. My track record is impeccable, I always reach the goals that are set in place, and I am a team player. My challenge is my director. The director does not value the experience I bring to the team, my track record or input. I am shut down on everything I suggest to help us do a better job at serving our customers. Instead, my director covers for my supervisor, who does not have experience in working with youth or know how to reach them. I am frustrated and thinking about leaving the company.
— Career Woes in Florida
Dear Career Woes,
First, it is so wonderful you do this type of work to help young people. I know from experience that it can be difficult at times, even though it is a gratifying experience. I also really enjoyed the work and also know how frustrating the job can be when others don’t share similar values. For some it is just a job, but for you it appears to be a calling. Even though that may be the case, it does not mean you need to stay and work in unfavorable conditions.
Of course, you know already know this, but I’ll put it out there anyway. You can always find another job. In fact, you probably should as long as you have been employed by this company for two years minimum. You also need to play nice so you can get a good reference.

In the meantime, stop concerning yourself with the other employees and putting too much focus on the negative. Just do your job. If they don’t approve of your idea, then just go with it. You already know the drill, which means there is no reason to stress yourself out when they disagree. You need to keep yourself together for your next job.
Here is something else for you to consider and remember. If you can’t find a comparable position with your passion to help our young adults, there are always volunteer opportunities to help you fill that void. Stress less. Help more.
