Production of the new HBO comedy series “Somebody Somewhere” is underway in the Chicago area. “Patti Cake$” star Bridget Everett plays a Kansas singer “on a journey to discover herself” in a project inspired by her own life.

The pilot, then called “Emporia,” was shot in 2019 in southwest suburban Lockport. HBO ordered “Somebody Somewhere” to series in July 2020. Most of the filming of the seven episodes will take place in the suburbs.

Bridget Everett attends the “Patti Cake$” New York premiere at the Metrograph on Aug. 14, 2017.

The cast includes Jeff Hiller (“Nightcap”); Mary Catherine Garrison (“Veep”); Danny McCarthy (“Prison Break”); Chicago native Mike Hagerty (“Lucky Louie”); Murray Hill (“Bored to Death”) and Chicago theater actor Jon Hudson Odom (“Lovecraft Country”). Mark and Jay Duplass (“Room 104?) are executive producers.

It’s been a busy spring for filming after last year’s monthslong shutdown for COVID-19. Besides TV shows, Deadline reported this week the North Shore indie feature “Pools,” starring Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”) and Mason Gooding (“Booksmart”), is set to begin production here later this month.

HBO, meanwhile, plans to air a follow-up to its series adaptation of the book “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.” The new episode, scheduled to premiere at 9 p.m. June 21, explores the 1984 unsolved killing of Kathleen Lombardo in Oak Park, a case that inspired the late author Michelle McNamara to become a true crime writer. Interviews were shot in the western suburbs over the last three years.
