Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dear Dr. June:

I was so excited to put together a five-year plan, work it and accomplish my goals. I reached the five-year mark without making it to one of my goals — the one I wanted the most. I feel a little disappointed in myself because I truly believed I was going to attain that goal. I am trying to pick up the pieces to keep going but feel unmotivated. How do I get my zeal back?

Dear Deflated:

We all have goals that sometimes miss the mark. We also have successes that are sometimes overlooked because it’s not the big goal that was set out to be accomplished. With that in mind, try these tips.

* Revisit your goals but put them in smaller chunks. In other words, break down your big goal into several parts. As you complete the parts, check them off. That’s an accomplishment.

* Revisit the last few years and look at where you are right now. Don’t consider what you did not accomplish. Only consider your successes, not matter how small.

* Make a list of at least 10 of your successes, or put them on a poster board using words and pictures. For example, I took several classes and passed them. I am still of sound mind to move forward with my goals.

* Help someone who needs assistance. Seeing and working with someone who is also trying to make things happen will give you the “zeal” to put things back in motion.

If you are willing to put the work in, you can still do it. Take everything that you have accomplished to move you toward your goal and get going. Your timeline may have changed, but not your opportunity to see it through.
