Artists sought for asphalt, basketball pole projects
Artists are invited to submit applications for a new asphalt art program being launched by the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission.
Willard Skate Park has been chosen as the location for the art project, located in Prairie Park, a city news release said. The artwork will cover the concrete pad upon which the skate structure and the basketball poles and backboards will be wrapped in vinyl printed mural material.
The goal is to engage park users by creating and installing art specifically for that location and also by allowing the users to have a voice in the artwork selection, the release said.
Applications will be reviewed for aesthetic quality, design, integrity and appropriateness to setting, architecture and social context before being shared with park users, who will be allowed to vote on their choice.
Applications deadline is June 11. Selected artists will receive an honorarium of up to $7,000, and Elgin artists will be given preference over those from out of town.
The basketball poles and backboard artwork may be submitted as a separate proposal from the concrete pad mural. There is no requirement for an artist to submit proposals on both, the release said.
