Dear Dr. June,
My live-in boyfriend and I are having communication issues. I tried to talk to him about some things and get him to open up, but instead he did and said more things that hurt me. I couldn’t talk to him, so I confided in my best friend because I just wanted to vent. She dismissed my feelings as if I was being overly dramatic or something. I expected her to be there for me and listen with an open heart and mind. She is supposed to be my friend. Now I am hurt by both my boyfriend and my best friend. — Feeling Lonely in Florida
Dear Feeling Lonely,
Maybe I’m mistaken, but there seems to be more than communication issues between you and your boyfriend. When you try to work out a problem, he adds to it by being even more hurtful. That’s not very loving. Ever consider finding someone who actually cares about you and your feelings?
When you are not communicating to take care of the small problems, it can very well turn into a super-size problem. Your relationship seems to be heading in that direction; subsequently, you may want to make some decisions about its future.

As for your best friend, give the situation some thought. Were you being dramatic? Is she at the point that she is tired of your whining? Are you upset because she told you the truth?
Yes, it is your best friend’s job to be there for you. However, the friendship also comes with the responsibility to be honest. Ask her why she thought you were overreacting and maybe you’ll find out some truths about the situation. Instead of being lonely, open your mind to what she has to say. Then you can determine if your friend was being insensitive or if she was accurate in her assessment.
