A Naperville Park District police officer who used a defibrillator to save the life of a person who had stopped breathing was honored Thursday with the Park Police Life Saving Award.

Officer Tyler Benjamin, presented with the award at the Naperville Park Board meeting, responded to a March 26 call about someone who had collapsed in the 100 block of Water Street, officials said.

Naperville police officers were performing CPR on the victim when Benjamin arrived. Following the instructions provided with the defibrillator, Benjamin was able to use the AED to restore a heartbeat until paramedics arrived, park district police Chief Steve Schindlbeck said.

A nurse at Edward Hospital in Naperville later called the dispatch center to let them know the patient was doing well, Schindlbeck said.

“The nurse went on to explain that if the AED had not been used, the patient would not have made it,” Schindlbeck said.

Also recognized at the park board meeting were police lieutenants Scott Wehrli and Mike Harrington, who are celebrating their 30th anniversaries with the Naperville Park District Police Department.
