La Grange’s Robert E. Coulter, Jr. American Legion Post 1941 will host a Memorial Day service at its post, at noon, Monday, May 31.
Post members will fire a rifle salute and ring a bell in remembrance of members who have passed. Speakers also will talk about the significance of the holiday. The public is welcome. Post 1941 is at 900 S. La Grange Road.
The American Legion’s Auxiliary Unit will hand out poppies for donations in a drive-through event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 29, in Post 1941’s parking lot. Donations benefit military veterans, active servicemen and women and their families.
Western Springs’ Veterans of Foreign Wars Post will hold a service at 10 a.m. May 31 at the historic water tower, at 914 Hillgrove Ave.
Post officials encourage community members to attend the service, which will not only honor servicemen and women who died in active military duty, but those first responders, health care employees and other essential workers who were on the frontlines during the pandemic, Cmdr. Esteban Lopez said.
Western Springs VFW Post 10778 has chosen Army veteran and former La Grange Police Chief Michael Holub as its Memorial Day Grand Marshal, although there will be no parade this year.
