Will County schedules annual book reuse/recycle for June

Will County’s annual book reuse/recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 4-6 at Joliet Park District’s Pilcher Park Nature Center, 2501 Highland Park Drive.

The free event is sponsored by the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division and the Joliet Park District.

Schools, libraries and members of the general public can bring any unused and unwanted books for reuse and recycling, a news release said. All types of hardcover and paperback books will be accepted and shared for free.

The annual event prevents thousands of books from going unused or dumped into landfills. Books that are not reused will be shipped for recycling at the end of the three-day event, the release said.

Due to COVID-19, participants will be required to wear masks and a limited number of people will be allowed in the building at one time. Additionally, outside areas, including a large tent and the nature center’s back porch, will also be available for browsing this year, the release said.

Marshall to hold ‘Chat with the Chief’ event May 25

Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall and members of his senior staff will meet with community members on Tuesday, May 25, during an informal “Chat with the Chief” event from 5 to 7 p.m. at Scott Elementary School, 500 Warwick Drive.

Residents are encouraged to stop by at any time during the two-hour event, which will be held outside on the blacktop west of the school’s main entrance if the weather allows, a news release said. In the event of inclement weather, the gathering will be inside the school’s gymnasium/multipurpose room.

There will be no formal presentation. The goal is to hold an “informal conversation in a relaxed atmosphere,” the release said.

“The pandemic caused us to halt in-person events for quite a while, so I’m really eager to get back out there and talk to citizens about whatever is on their minds,” Marshall said in the release. “We’ll be ready to listen to concerns and answer questions about crime rates, police reform measures, or anything else a resident wants to talk about.”

Park district adding new soccer programs for younger kids

Naperville Park District will open registration for its fall youth soccer programs beginning Tuesday, May 18, with two new programs available for younger children.

Naperville Youth Soccer (NYS), the district’s recreational league, is introducing the NYS Pre-Kademy for children ages 21/2 to 3. Pre-Kademy is a practice-only league, where children can learn new skills, have fun and be active outdoors, a news release said.

Naperville Premier Soccer League, which offers focused skill training and a competitive environment without the time commitment or cost of a travel league, is now adding a program for first graders. Premier Soccer League University gives players specialized training within a recreational experience and provides a bridge between Naperville Youth Soccer and Premier Soccer, the release said.

Naperville Premier Soccer League participants register as part of a team. However, for fall 2021, Naperville Premier Soccer is adding the option of registering as an individual. Teams will be made up of individuals who register and may include more than one grade level, the release said.

DuPage offering online Memorial Day portal for second year

Due to COVID-19 public health concerns, DuPage County will relaunch its interactive Memorial Day portal, allowing residents to “virtually” gather and share stories and photos honoring the memories of fallen members of the military.

The county’s IT and GIS team created the interactive memorial, which can be found at www.dupageco.org/memorial. Residents can use it to share Honor Posts for a family member or friend as well as a photo and written tribute, a news release said.

The website also features quotes, poems and videos offering historical information surrounding the Memorial Day holiday.

“When we launched this portal last year, we received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community,” County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said in the release.

“Our residents recognize the importance of Memorial Day. If we cannot yet gather in person, our digital Memorial Wall provides an interactive way to tell the stories of DuPage County men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces,” he said.

Police ticket 90 people for ‘distracted driving’ offenses

The Naperville Police Department issued 90 citations to people using cell phones and other electronic devices during last month’s distracted driving enforcement campaign, police said.

There also were 12 citations for seatbelt violations and 36 for other offenses, including not having a valid driver’s license, driving with a suspended license and illegal transportation of cannabis, a news release said.

The driver who was cited for illegal transportation of cannabis was also arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, police said.

“We strongly enforce distracted driving laws for one reason – to save lives,” Sgt. Rick Krakow said. “Choose to drive distracted, and you’ll have a phone in one hand and a ticket in the other.”

The Illinois distracted driving campaign was paid for with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the release said.
