Feathers, sneakers, oh my: Oscars looks that missed the mark

And the award for Best Dressed… isn’t any of these stars.

Sure, the Oscars bring out the very best fashion — the glitz, glam, the pizazz. But as with any art form, missteps are inevitable.

Laura Dern

Last year’s Best Supporting Actress Winner’s (“Marriage Story”) Oscar de la Renta look — black top and white feathered skirt — was certainly an opposites attract situation, but with relentlessly awkward results. Maybe Dern was looking to fly far away from the current reality, but her dress didn’t stick the landing.

Halle Berry’s Hair

The “Monster’s Ball” star looked gorgeous as always in purple Dolce & Gabbana, but her short, angular new ‘do — and the teeny tiny bangs — gave off some true Edna Mode vibes.

Chloé Zhao

The “Nomadland” filmmaker made history Sunday as the first woman of color to win the Academy Award for Best Director. And while the Hermes dress and white sneakers donned by Zhao, who’s also nominated for Film Editing, Best Picture, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay), weren’t necessarily bad, the look gave off a definite dressed-down vibe. Then again, we’ve been in sweatpants a year, maybe it takes time.

Celeste

Best Original Song nominee Celeste’s (“The Trial of the Chicago Seven” track, “Hear My Voice”) bold red lip was gorgeous — but her Queen of Hearts-esque look was a little busier than needed. The transparent black fabric distracted from the otherwise off-the-shoulder gown it held up, which included red and black diagonally checkered fringe, and plasticky cuffs. The clever glittery clutch, shaped like a literal heart, arteries and all, at least created a fun metaphor: Celeste had her heart in her hands.

Reese Witherspoon

The “Big Little Lies” star read the room wrong. Her red dress may have been Dior, but it looked like one of those prom dresses Macy’s has on the sales rack. The thin black belt cinching the waist only made the getup look more confused.
