Four children were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Tuesdayfollowing a crash about 12:30 p.m. on southbound Route 83, just south of Oak Brook Road/31st Street.
The children and two adults were involved in the crash of a four-door sedan and a four-door SUV. Both adults refused treatment.
Oak Brook police said a black Toyota Sedan was parked on the left shoulder of Route 83 near 31st Street. The driver stepped out of the car and remained on the shoulder when a red Kia SUV struck the Toyota in the rear.
The drivers of each vehicle had different stories of why the crash occurred, but both stated the Kia SUV struck the Toyota in the rear, police said. The evidence clearly shows that as well, they said.
Police said tickets will be issued to the driver of the Kia SUV for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and unsafe lane change.
One of the children in the crash has a broken leg, and everyone else is “fine,” police said Wednesday.
