Fire captain one of 550 in world to attain fire officer status

Stephen Shink is the first captain in the Naperville Fire Department and the department’s only current line officer to be credentialed as a fire officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence and The Commission on Professional Credentialing.

Shink, a 20-year fire department veteran, received the designation after completing a months-long peer-review process, a city new release said.

“The honor reflects his qualifications in education, experience, affiliations, technical competence, community involvement, training and skill development as well as professional contributions, recognitions and memberships,” the release said.

There are only 550 fire officer designees in the world, according to the release.

Shink has been recognized in the department for his contributions to the creation of a Rescue Task Force, members of which can enter dangerous scenes and begin to provide medical care to the injured, and the Tactical Emergency Medical Services, which is trained to join specialized police response teams in active operations at critical scenes.
