A 19-year-old man who died Monday night in a shooting in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the city’s South Side was identified by authorities Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to a call at about 6:45 p.m. of a person shot in the 200 block of East 51st Street and discovered a man unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest in the courtyard behind an apartment building, according to police.

The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead, police said.

He was identified as Caron Reaves, 19, according information released Tuesday by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which did not give a home address for Reaves. Public records showed that as of June 2020 he had lived about a block from where he was shot.

Earlier in the day, a man 41, was on the sidewalk in the 3300 block of West 25th Street about 1 p.m. when he was approached by a silver vehicle, and an occupant from within fired shots, police said.

The man was struck in the back, chest and arm, and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, police said.

No one was in custody and detectives are investigating.
