Illinois State Police are investigating a recent fatal shooting by police of a 52-year-old man outside a bank in Stephenson County, authorities said Monday.
The Stephenson County sheriff’s office asked the state police to assist with a shooting by a deputy from the sheriff’s office shortly after 9 a.m. Friday at the Citizens State Bank in Lena, state police said in a Monday statement.
The sheriff’s office said officers were responding to a call about a man who had entered the bank with a firearm. After arriving on the scene, David W. Determan, of Lena, “was observed firing his weapon into the air,” according to state police.
Determan spoke with officers and a sheriff’s office negotiator while holding a firearm, then raised the weapon in the direction of officers, at which point a deputy fired at Determan, police said.
Determan was taken to a hospital in Rockford, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
A preliminary investigation found Determan’s cause of death to be consistent with a shooting, Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz said.
An investigation by state police is ongoing, authorities said.
