For the first time since Township High School District 113 closed its doors under Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order last March, students at Highland Park and Deerfield High School will have the option to attend full-day in-person classes.

Deerfield and Highland Park high school students who choose full-day in-person instruction return Tuesday, April 6. The announcement comes after a March 29 Board of Education meeting during which board members voted to recommend the transition to a new schedule.

Under new Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois Department of Public Health’s guidelines, students can now be 3-to-6 feet apart rather than the previous 6 feet, thereby allowing more children to return to the classroom.

District 113 joins Deerfield Public Schools District 109 and North Shore School District 112 in offering full-day in-person instruction to students.

In District 109, 88% of students are already reportedly back in the classroom. And in District 112, Superintendent Michael Lubelfeld announced kindergarten through fifth grade students will transition to full-day in-person learning on April 6, while sixth through eighth grade students will transition April 12.

In District 113, students who choose to be on campus will continue to receive SHIELD testing twice a week. On March 2, SHIELD testing became mandatory for students on the district’s campuses.
