New for the 2022 Golf R, Volkswagen has added its 4Motion all-wheel-drive system with rear-axle torque vectoring.
The new system uses a rear differential with two multi-plate clutches that can distribute up to 100 percent of rear torque to an individual rear wheel, Volkswagen said. The standard 4Motion system transferred power in a 50:50 ratio.
The new system decides how to distribute power between the wheels based on speed, power application, yaw and other factors, Volkswagen said.
The system is connected to the Vehicle Dynamics Manager, which integrates the torque vectoring axle, electronic differential locks and cornering performance of the Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive damping system. The system monitors vehicle handling on every corner, adapting wheel damping up to 200 times a second.
The torque vectoring technology allowed for the new track-only “Drift” mode in the Golf R’s updated Driving Mode Selection. The torque vectoring system kicks off the drift by sending all rear torque to the outside wheel in a turn.
The Golf R’s infotainment system ensures the Drift profile is only selected on private roads by displaying a confirmation prompt before it is activated.
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R has a four-cylinder, 1,984 cc turbocharged TSI engine, delivering 315 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds.
The Golf R’s top track speed is 155 mph.
The Golf R has 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels paired with summer performance tires. Matte chrome exterior mirror caps project the R logo on the road when the doors are opened and closed.
The rear bumper incorporates a high-gloss black diffuser, framed by chrome-plated twin tailpipes for the standard sport exhaust.
On the interior, there is a 10-inch touchscreen display, as well as Nappa leather seats with blue accents and an R logo on the backrest.
The sport steering wheel is heated, with ergonomically shaped DSG paddles and an R button to select specific driving profiles.
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is expected to arrive at dealerships later this year.
