An Indian Head Park resident has been charged with threatening a police officer.

Matthew T. Johnson, 51, of the 100 block of Acacia Drive, is accused of punching an Indian Head Park police officer’s vehicle and threatening him Feb. 22.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office charged Johnson with threatening a public official.

An Indian Head Park officer on patrol allegedly stopped his vehicle about 5:20 p.m. Feb. 22, as Johnson was jogging nearby, Indian Head Park police officials said.

Johnson allegedly punched the vehicle and said, “I am willing to die today, son. Are you?” the sheriff’s office reported.

The following day, Johnson allegedly made additional threats against the officer, both over the telephone and in person, stated Matt Walberg, press secretary for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

Another officer also reported seeing Johnson standing on the balcony of his home waving a handgun and yelling something, police officials said.

Indian Head Park requested the county sheriff’s office investigate the matter and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charge.

Johnson could not be reached for comments.

Johnson voluntarily surrendered to the sheriff’s police and had a bond hearing March 2, Walberg said. He was released from custody after posting 10% of his $100,000 bond.
