Geneva school district wrong to end in-school Fridays

This is an open letter to the Geneva School District 304 Board of Education to express our concern about your recent, shocking decision to take away in-person learning days on Fridays and change them to remote online school days.

This decision was made abruptly, with no parent input, on Jan. 11. Our kids had been in school as hybrid learners since September 2020. In our schools, COVID cases have been minimal with no spread found. Parents have the option to opt-out of hybrid schooling and have their children be educated remotely if they choose.

We call on you, the school board, to share your reopening plans for full time in-person schooling with our community. The plan specifics should be well underway at this point.

Frankly, we feel alarmed due to your recent decision that the board and district are moving in the opposite direction from returning to a complete in-person learning schedule that the Illinois State Board of Education, Centers for Disease Control and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend for the education and well-being of our children, your students.

Our requests: 1. Return Fridays to in-person learning under the previously agreed-upon hybrid plan. 2. Hold a round-table meeting with the school board and parents to address immediate steps for reopening schools for full-time, in-person instruction. 3. Collaborate with and include parents in the board’s private “working group.”
