Police are asking for help in identifying the driver of an SUV who fled after striking and fatally injuring a man in the East Garfield Park neighborhood earlier this fall.
On Oct. 14, a 54-year-old man was walking on the 2600 block of West Van Buren Street just after 7:45 p.m. when he was hit from behind by a black SUV, according to police.
According to an accident report, a witness told police that a black Chevy Trailblazer struck the man, who was walking on the left side of the street from behind, and quickly swerved to the right, then continued west on Van Buren, not stopping. The man was knocked out of his shoes by the force of the crash, according to the report.
The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately respond to a request for information on the man’s identity.
Police have not yet located the driver of the vehicle.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the major accidents investigation unit at 312-745-4521.
