Now the Cubs face the strong possibility of cutting ties with both homegrown outfielders by Wednesday’s 7 p.m. deadline for tendering contracts to all remaining unsigned players.

The potential moves would be part of retooling a roster that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2017 and has four core players — including Schwarber — due to reach free agency after 2021. A large revenue shortfall stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic also could have an impact on the Cubs’ decisions.

Kris Bryant and Javier Baez, the Cubs’ two most expensive arbitration-eligible players who are also one year away from free agency, are expected to receive contract offers. The Cubs would retain their rights with the flexibility to entertain trade offers while negotiating contracts for 2021.

But Schwarber faces an uncertain future after the left fielder batted .188 in the 60-game 2020 season while earning a prorated portion of his $7.9 million salary.

The Cubs could attempt to trade Schwarber, tender him a contract for 2021 or allow him to go to free agency without compensation.

Ultimately, the Cubs must decide whether tendering a contract to Schwarber is more important to their future than cutting their expenses while losing a left-handed power hitter who produced 38 home runs and 92 RBIs in 2019.

Schwarber, 27, and Almora, 26, are connected by more than their distinction as former Cubs first-round picks.

In Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, Schwarber — who had recovered from a severe knee injury in April to return for the World Series — opened the 10th inning with a single.

Almora pinch-ran for Schwarber, advanced to second on a deep fly to center and scored the go-ahead run on Ben Zobrist’s double in the 8-7 victory over the Cleveland Indians for the Cubs’ first World Series championship in 108 years.

But after making a career-high 479 plate appearances in 2018, Almora batted only .236 with a .651 OPS in 2019, and Ian Happ’s fast start in 2020 earned him the full-time center field job. The Cubs optioned Almora to their alternate training site in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 1 and didn’t add him to the postseason roster.

The Cubs’ other top unsigned arbitration-eligible players are Happ and catchers Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini. All three are expected to be tendered contracts.

The other unsigned arbitration-eligible players whose future with the Cubs could be in doubt are first baseman-outfielder Jose Martinez and relievers Kyle Ryan, Colin Rea, Ryan Tepera and Dan Winkler.

The Cubs 40-man roster stands at 37, and non-tendering players would open spots they could fill through multiplayer trades or free-agent signings.

Several teams face similar financial dilemmas and could non-tender players, thus expanding the pool of free agents. The Cubs could opt to replace Schwarber through one of those options if he’s non-tendered.
