Vernon Hills will be hosting a parade through town on Saturday, Nov. 28, which will conclude with a virtual livestream of their annual Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremony.

The event, which is being put on by the village, Countryside Fire Protection District, the Park District and the Vernon Hills Police Department, will feature Santa riding on one of the CFD’s fire-trucks. Set to begin around 2:30 p.m., it will go through many of the village’s streets with officials expected to release maps at a later date of what time residents can expect Santa to pass by their area.

The parade will finish around 5 p.m. at the Vernon Hills Golf Course, where Mayor Roger Byrne will be on-hand to help with the lighting ceremony, a release from the village states.

Officials at the village board meeting on Tuesday stressed the event will follow the governor’s orders regarding the coronavirus pandemic, including the 10-person limit on social gatherings.

Village Trustee James Schultz said the village has been doing the parade for many years, and hit on the importance of such an event given the circumstances of the pandemic.

“We wanted to have some level of fun here while helping people stay safe and healthy,” Schultz said. “

In a normal year, Santa arrives on a firetruck at the golf course to a crowd of people. As part of the celebration, the village offers hot chocolate, cookies and other beverages.

“It’s usually a gathering, but this year we’re doing it in reverse,” Schultz said. “We’re asking everybody to stay home, but come out to their driveways to say hello to Santa.”
