The Chicago Cubs will receive much-welcomed relief help, but not in the form of a bullpen arm.
Wrigley Field is now listed as a National Historic Landmark, seven years after ownership applied for the federal status, the team announced Thursday.
That approval will give the Ricketts family, who spent about $1 billion in renovations of the storied 106-year-old baseball shrine, access to federal income tax credits on the “1060 Project” that started at the end of the 2014 season.
The move provides the Ricketts family with financial help similar to what the owners of the Boston Red Sox received after Fenway Park underwent a similar face-lift more than a decade ago.
“Wrigley Field is a special place in the hearts of generations of fans,” Chicago Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement. “That’s why, from our first day as owners, we committed to preserving Wrigley, which will now take its well-earned place in the lineup of American history and culture as a national treasure.”
National Historic Landmarks identify buildings, sites, districts, structures, and objects that have been determined by the Secretary of the Interior to be “nationally significant in American history and culture.”
The Ricketts family briefly sought taxpayer assistance, but Crane Kenney, the Cubs President of Business Operations, has emphasized annually to fans at the Cubs Convention about the government tax burdens the franchise faces each season without citing the cost of the ballpark renovations.
The Cubs restored the facade of Wrigley while making several significant modern upgrades, such as video boards in left and right fields, new seats and dugouts, several safety measures and premier clubs.

“The historical significance of Wrigley Field is interwoven into our nation’s story and a key part of what has become America’s beloved pastime for over a century,” David L. Bernhardt, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, said in a statement. “It is with great enthusiasm that I designate this iconic national treasure, the site of many legendary events, innovations and traditions in baseball history, as a National Historic Landmark.”
