Billy Porter will soon add “film director” to his impressive list of achievements.

The Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award-winning entertainer has signed up to direct the coming-of-age drama “What If?”

Penned by Alvaro García Lecuona, the story centers on a high school senior who writes on an online message board about his crush on Kelsa, a trans girl from his school.

In January 2019, Lecuona’s project was highlighted by GLAAD, the world’s largest LBGTQ media advocacy organization, in a list of the “most promising unmade LGBTQ-inclusive scripts in Hollywood.”

The project will be the first film under a recently announced deal between MGM and Killer Films, a New York City-based independent production company which has been behind some of the most important LGBTQ-themed films in the past 25 years, such as “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Carol,” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”

“I’m thrilled to be part of this new space in Hollywood for telling all types of stories from all types of people,” Porter said, according to Variety.

In August, MGM relaunched its Orion Pictures in a bid to amplify undeserved voices.

The label’s president, Alyssa Mayo, said in a statement Wednesday that, “‘What If?’ is perfectly emblematic of the ambitions we have for the new Orion Pictures: To tell stories about the totality of the human experience.”

“I am grateful to be in a position to usher some of these stories into the mainstream and I am humbled that heavy hitters like [Killer Films’] Christine Vachon and Alana Mayo have entrusted and empowered me in this insane time we all find ourselves in,” added Porter, who last year made history by becoming the first openly gay Black man to win an Emmy award for lead actor in a drama series, for his work on FX’s “Pose.”

“We are the people,” the 51-year-old star said, during his emotional thank you speech.

“We, as artists, are the people that get to change the molecular structure of the hearts and minds of the people who live on this planet. Please don’t ever stop doing that. Please don’t ever stop telling the truth.”
