Replacement of Naperville Central High School’s field house floor heads the $6 million list of capital improvements planned for next summer by Naperville School District 203.

Pat Dolan, director of buildings and grounds in District 203, reviewed projects planned for the coming year this week school board meeting. Some of the work proposed is new playground equipment at some schools, building roof repairs, and floor and door replacements.

The district’s plan is to spend about $6 million on capital projects annually for the next five years, Dolan said. Once that five-year cycle is complete, a new facilities assessment will be done, he said.

“Our intention is to have completed enough projects that if we do initiate a new comprehensive facility assessment, it’s not based on lagging projects,” Dolan said.

The proposed spending plan to be included in the 2021-22 budget will be voted on by the school board at a future meeting.

In addition to installing a new field house floor at Naperville Central for $575,000, other projects include:

Replacing the Naperville Central swimming pool HVAC unit, budgeted for $675,000;

Replacing or refurbishing playground equipment at multiple schools, including the Ann Reid Early Childhood Center, budgeted for $320,000;

Upgrading the learning centers at two schools, budgeted for $496,000;

Making roof repairs at several buildings, budgeted for about $1.2 million.

Dolan said several capital projects were completed this summer, including upgrades to the learning centers at Naper and Prairie elementary schools at a combined cost of $394,000, well under the $476,000 budgeted.

However, installation of synthetic turf fields at the two high schools came in over budget. The district had planned to spent $475,000 at Central and $490,000 at North, but ended up paying $507,000 for the former and $593,000 for the latter, district data shows.

Because other projects came in about $600,000 less than estimated, there was no budget overrun, Dolan said.
