Voters voted against instances of systemic racism in a number of states Tuesday.

Rhode Island

In Rhode Island, whose official name was “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations,” voters approved a proposal to eliminate the final three words, which some say evoked a legacy of slavery.

Mississippi

In Mississippi, voters approved a proposal for a new state flag with a magnolia design. The vote came after legislators in June ended the use of a flag bearing a Confederate battle emblem.

Alabama

Alabama voters approved an amendment that would begin the process of deleting racist language from the state’s 119-year-old constitution, which was approved to entrench white supremacy as state law during the Jim Crow era.

Nebraska

Nebraska voters easily approved a measure Tuesday to strip language from the state constitution that provides an exemption to its ban on slavery. Nebraska’s proposal eliminates a passage in the state constitution, dating from the 19th century, that allows slavery as punishment for a crime.

Utah

Utah voters approved changing the Utah constitution to remove a clause allowing slavery as a form of punishment.
