Chicago Bears backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky suffered a right shoulder injury during a one-play appearance against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Bears coach Matt Nagy said Trubisky is rehabbing the shoulder, and he didn’t give a timeline for how long Trubisky might be out.

Sunday’s appearance was Trubisky’s first since Nick Foles replaced him at quarterback in Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons. There wasn’t an immediate indication he was injured on his lone play, a 3-yard carry in the first quarter.

After linebacker Alex Anzalone and safety Malcolm Jenkins tackled him, Trubisky jumped up, tossed the ball to the official and stood on the sideline. But he didn’t enter for another play.

Nagy said Trubisky landed on the shoulder “weird.” Trubisky didn’t know initially how bad the injury was, but the pain lingered as the night went on.

“It’s unfortunate for him because he went in there, and I know it was only (3) yards, but it creates a threat to the defense,” Nagy said. “We’ve just got to work through it, and I know he’ll work hard day by day, seeing where things are at and trying to rehab it back.”

Trubisky previously injured his right shoulder in 2018 and missed two games. He had surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left, non-throwing shoulder this past offseason. He suffered that injury in Week 4 of 2019 and missed only one game, playing the remaining 11 games with a brace.

Nagy said Trubisky was “bummed” to be working through another injury.

“It’s unfortunate when any player gets hurt, let alone him, when he’s had a couple years of shoulder injuries,” Nagy said. “And so that part for him and for us is upsetting and frustrating. Disappointing is probably the better word.

“But at the same point in time, Mitch has been really, really good throughout this whole process. I couldn’t have asked for him to be any better. He has handled it like an absolute pro, and it doesn’t surprise me one bit. The position that we are in and that we’ve gone through to get to this point, we also know that using him in different areas and growing with a package with him can be good. And I think that was a start for us right there.”

If Trubisky can’t back up Foles on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, third-stringer Tyler Bray would be the Bears’ next option.

Bray has been in the league since 2013, all with the Kansas City Chiefs and Bears. He has only one regular-season pass attempt in that time.

When asked if Bray would be ready to step in if needed, Nagy responded: “I hope so, because he’s only been with me eight years. You know how much I appreciate Tyler. … You’re able to have a guy like Tyler who has been in this offense a long time. And he’s grown a lot. He hasn’t had a lot of chances, per se, other than preseason.

“If Tyler ends up being the backup, he’s one play away — just like that. You guys talk about contingencies and strategies and all that. Those are all things you’ve got to look at. He’s worked hard to get to this point. He’s been extremely focused. And you never know.”

The Bears also brought in quarterbacks Jake Rudock and Kyle Sloter for a tryout Wednesday. Rudock was a sixth-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions out of Michigan in 2016. He spent the last four years with the Lions and Miami Dolphins and has five career pass attempts, all with the Lions in 2017.

Sloter has spent time with the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals and Lions since 2017 but hasn’t appeared in a game.

Trubisky’s injury is the latest turn in a rough year for the No. 2 pick in the 2017 draft. The Bears declined his fifth-year option and pushed him into a quarterback competition by trading for Foles. Then after Trubisky won the competition, Nagy pulled him after 21/2 games.

Trubisky completed 51 of 86 passes for 560 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions this year as the Bears starter. Nagy pulled him after the Bears fell behind the Falcons 26-10 in the third quarter following a Trubisky interception.

Foles led a wild fourth-quarter comeback for a 30-26 victory, but the offense has continued to struggle with him at the helm.

On Monday, Nagy shot down a question about turning back to Trubisky after former Bears tight end Zach Miller tweeted a photo of him wearing a “Mitch Please” T-shirt in the middle of Sunday’s loss to the Saints.

“We as a team, we watch tape, we watch video and we do what’s best,” Nagy said. “We make the best decision based off of how we do as a team, not just one position, and so that’s what we do. I appreciate everyone’s opinions and thoughts, suggestions. But there’s a lot more to it right now than that.”
