Northbrook District 28 has seen two positive COVID-19 cases in its schools in the past week, according to officials.

The cases were reported at Greenbriar and Meadowbrook, two of the district’s K-5 schools that serve about 400 students each. The schools are running full in-person and full remote options, and about 77% of families had opted for in-person learning ahead of the school year, according to communications director Terry Ryan.

Ryan said the district would not specify whether the recent cases were of students or staff members “in order to protect the identity of the individual” but said the two cases do not appear to be related.

Superintendent Larry Hewitt sent a message to families Monday to notify them that someone at Meadowbrook School reported earlier that day testing positive for COVID-19.

He said the district has been working with the Cook County Department of Public Health to identify and notify close contacts and require them to stay home for 14 days, as well as deep cleaning and sanitizing the school.

According to Hewitt, the individual had been in isolation since the onset of their symptoms, and no close contacts were associated with the person in this case. Close contacts are defined as people who were within six feet for more than 15 minutes.

Another case was reported a week earlier on Sept. 14 at Greenbriar School. In a message to families the following day, Hewitt said the individual had been in isolation since Sept. 11 waiting for test results.

Those who were noted as being in close contact with the individual in this case were notified separately, Hewitt said.

According to Hewitt, there is no need for families to quarantine or take further action, unless they received notice about being close contacts to the first individual reported. He said families should continue to monitor their symptoms and inform the school office if they notice symptoms.

About 1,800 students in pre-K through eighth grade attend the district’s four schools, according to the district website. They began the school year on Aug. 24.
