A 56-year-old Bridgeview man has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving in connection with a January crash that killed a 5-year-old Orland Park girl, police said Friday.

Ahmad Alzobi, of the 7700 block of 79th Place, Bridgeview, voluntarily turned himself in Thursday and was charged with reckless homicide, aggravated reckless driving and driving without insurance. He was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Friday afternoon at the Bridgeview courthouse.

Police said Alzobi was the driver of a GMC Yukon Denali traveling 63 mph in a posted 45-mph zone Jan. 23 when his car struck a silver sedan carrying a driver and two young children at 151st Street and Harlem Avenue. The roads were covered with snow, ice and water, police said.

The driver of the sedan and a 6-year-old child also were injured in the crash, police said.

Alzobi’s Denali struck the passenger side of the sedan as it turned left onto 151st Street, according to police. The impact of the crash spun the sedan into a snowplow that was stopped at the intersection. Police said in January the traffic light was yellow for northbound and southbound traffic on Harlem Avenue at the time of the crash.

Alzobi was charged following a months long investigation that included accident reconstruction, said police Sgt. Phil Glecier.

Bond for Alzobi was set at $25,000 Friday with a requirement of electronic monitoring, according to a spokesman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. He is scheduled to appear before a Cook County judge again on Oct. 16.
