Cher helped to raise nearly $2 million for Joe Biden in a Zoom-powered fund-raiser attended by 500 lucky participants.
The Oscar-winning actress, best-selling singer and all-around iconic superstar was the headliner of a virtual event Monday that was designed to rally the LGBTQ troops in support of the Democratic ticket in this year’s presidential election.
Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ill. — and a rising star in the Democratic party — introduced the “Believe” singer, praising her advocacy and urging fellow Zoom attendees to ask themselves, “Do you believe in life after Trump?”
According to USA Today, Buttigieg, the first openly gay presidential candidate to win a caucus or primary, noted that he was “the only thing between hundreds of prominent LGBTQ+ activists and Cher,” before inviting her to join the virtual meeting.
“Hi, it’s me,” Cher said, appearing on screen wearing a black leather biker jacket. “Your poster girl since I was 9 years-old. I walked into our living room and met two of the most adorable gay hairdressers ever.”
Cher told the crowd that she’d known Biden since 2006, when she said she invited herself to his office.
“I saw a speech Joe had given and it was love at first speech,” she said. “So I went to his office to grill him and I asked him really pointed questions and unlike most politicians, Joe actually listened to me and cared [about] what I had to say.”
“Joe is smart enough, he’s kind enough, he’s strong enough,” she said, in a clear reference to her 1999 hit, “Strong Enough.”
She wasn’t as kind, however, when she referred to the current occupant of the White House: “The guy is really an idiot.”
Also appearing at the virtual event were two high-profile openly LGBTQ lawmakers: Rep. David Cicilline (R.I.) and Sen. Tammy Baldwin (Wisc.).
Cher — whose son with the late Sonny Bono, Chaz Bono, is transgender — pointed at the current administration’s treatment of the trans community, with policies targeting military personnel, and health care for transgender people.
“After all this, Trump has the audacity to say he supports Americans he calls, quote, ‘the gays.’ I’m surprised he doesn’t call them his ‘gay generals,'” she said, according to The Washington Blade.
The legendary performer is just one of a line-up of a-list entertainers who are joining the Biden/Harris campaign’s fund-raising efforts, including actors Debra Messing, Eric McCormack and Jennifer Garner.
On Sept. 14, Cyndi Lauper will be the headliner of another major LGBTQ fund-raiser. She’ll be joined by Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids, the first openly LGBTQ Native American elected to the U.S. Congress and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
