A longtime suburban Chicago educator known for his work developing innovative STEM lessons has been named assistant principal of The Skokie School, officials with Winnetka School District 36 announced.

Louis Kotvis joins District 36 after most recently serving as an instructional coach at Skokie School District 73.5, where he provided guidance to teachers related to designing student-centered lesson planning and classroom instruction, District 36 officials said in a statement.

The District 36 school board recently approved a contract for Kotvis, who will be paid a salary of $95,000 for his role at the middle school, which serves students in fifth and sixth grade.

Kotvis’ work on developing a STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – curriculum was recently featured on WGN TV News, officials said.

“Mr. Kotvis has a comprehensive knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning, has a track record of positive communication and collaboration with families and colleagues, and a passion for instructional coaching,” District 36 Superintendent Trisha Kocanda said in a statement.

“Mr. Kotvis’ extensive experience, including serving as a teacher, STEM Coach, and Instructional Coach, will be an asset to students, families and staff,” Kocanda said.

Kotvis said he is looking forward to, “fostering excellence in teaching and learning at The Skokie School.”

“I am eager to build relationships and provide support to families and staff as we begin this unprecedented school year together,” Kotvis said.

District 36 schools will re-open on Aug. 27 with a half-day, hybrid model that includes both in-person and remote learning, and which will be in place until at least Oct. 1, pending any changes in COVID-19 metrics or other data, officials said.
