The Norridge Park District is offering childcare for Norridge and Harwood Heights elementary and middle school students who need a place to go during e-learning hours. It is an option for working parents who can’t stay home with their children during remote learning.
The district is partnering with Norridge School District 80, Pennoyer School District 79, and Union Ridge School District 86, which are all following a hybrid learning model. Students learn remotely three days of the week and attend classes in person twice a week, according to the districts.
“The Norridge Park District is excited to work together with our local schools and provide E-Learning Care for students … the park district program will provide care in a safe and supervised environment with our trained staff,” park district Annemarie Flaherty said in an email.
The program for Norridge D80 students will be at Leigh and Giles schools in Norridge, and Pennoyer and Union Ridge students will be at the park district.
Students can attend from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the option for a before and after school care program. Outside of class times, staff will lead kids in arts and crafts, outdoor activities and socially distanced group games, Flaherty said.
“Activities will be conducted outdoors due to the benefit of fresh air related to COVID-19 and the emotional boost being outdoors provides,” Flaherty said. “Outdoors can help you feel less tense, stressed, upset or depressed.”
Everyone is required to wear masks, and rooms will have no more than 15 students, Flaherty said. Students should bring their own school supplies for elearning and a lunch, according to the district.
The cost is $40 for the school day, with an additional fee for before and after care, Flaherty said. The districts aren’t providing a financial subsidy to lower the cost for parents, but Pennoyer and Union Ridge are providing desks and hotspots for internet access. D80 is providing classroom space and desks, according to Flaherty.
