Basketball superstar LeBron James and fellow Los Angeles Lakers made a strong political statement Tuesday by editing — and wearing — a popular fashion statement sported by Trump voters.
Arriving to their first playoff appearance against the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night, the players wore an altered version of the bright-red “Make America Great Again” hat.
The words “Great Again,” however, were crossed out and “Arrest The Cops Who Killed Breonna Taylor” was printed right below it.
Taylor was a 26-year-old African-American emergency room technician who was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers in her Kentucky apartment on March 13. None of the officers involved in shooting have been charged with a crime.
James, who completed his message-focused outfit with a t-shirt that read “By Any Means,” posted a series of photos on his Instagram.
The caption reinforced his idea: “Let’s Get It,” he wrote, followed by hashtag #JusticeforBreonnaTaylor.
The official Titter account for the Los Angeles Lakers also shared some photos of the team wearing the hat.
“Demand Justice,” the Lakers tweeted.
Speaking to reporters after the Lakers’ 100-93 loss, James explained his statement.
“You know, this is something that we continue to put our foot on the gas, continue to pressure,” he told reporters, according to ESPN.
“You know, the situation that’s going on in Louisville, Kentucky. An innocent woman being killed in Breonna Taylor, a woman who had a bright future and her future was taken away from her,” he said. “And there’s been no arrests. There’s been no justice. Not only for her, but for her family. And we want to continue to shed light on that situation, because it’s just unjust, and that’s what it’s about.”
