Nicor Gas company will begin a natural gas improvement project for neighborhoods in Leyden Township, Melrose Park and Northlake.

Workers will inspect sewers, identify new meter locations, install new natural gas main and lines and reconfigure inside piping, according to a news release from the company.

The work is set to begin Thursday along the 2100 block of Mannheim Road.

Residential areas will include:

the 300 block of Dewey Avenue

the 10400 block of Dickens Avenue

the 400 and 500 blocks of Geneva Avenue

the 300 block of East Lyndale Avenue

the 10400 block of West Lyndale Avenue

the 10400 block of West Medill Avenue

the 10400 block of West Palmer Avenue.

“Motorists can expect some lane reductions during construction hours along Mannheim Road,” spokeswoman Jennifer Golz said in an email. “Roadway impacts will shift as needed when the work shifts into the residential sections of the project.”

Golz said the project is expected to be finished by the end of the year. Around two miles of pipeline, which dates to the 1950s, will be replaced, according to Golz.

The work is part of Nicor’s “Investing in Illinois” project, which replaces aging natural gas infrastructure. Earlier this year, six miles of natural gas main was “modernized” in Northlake, Golz said.
