The Lynwood Police Department reported Friday that the reptilian, dubbed “Alex the Alligator,” had been safely caught in Lake Lynwood late Thursday night.
The department said in a statement that officers responded to the lake Wednesday after receiving reports of a possible alligator sighting and spoke to witnesses who showed them a photo of the reptile that appeared to confirm the validity of the sighting.
Police and Fire department officials then conducted a search of the area, with the aid of a drone, and Cook County Animal and Rabies Control provided a representative from the Chicago Herpetological Society with experience capturing alligators.
It wasn’t immediately clear how the gator was captured, but the Fire Department reported Thursday that traps had been set and baited, and asked residents to avoid the lake’s shoreline so as not to frighten the creature.
The alligator will be quarantined for 30 days before being sent to a yet-to-be-determined reptile park in a southern state, the fire officials said.
