Bond was denied for the 22-year-old man who is accused of firing a semi-automatic rifle in Elmhurst in May and wounding a resident as he walked his dog.
DuPage County Associate Judge David E. Schwartz on Saturday decided Alec Gonzales, who is charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery for discharging a firearm, would be held in custody without bond, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced.
Gonzales, who has lived on the 600 block of South Berkley Avenue in Elmhurst and on the 8500 block of East Grandview Street in Mesa, Arizona, is accused of firing a Bushmaster AR-15 semi-automatic rifle eight times at about 8:50 p.m. May 14 and hitting a 55-year-old Elmhurst man four times on the 800 block of South Linden Avenue. Two of the shots grazed the victim’s head and two hit him in the side as he was walking his dog, the state’s attorney reported.

Officers recovered a rifle believed to be used in the shooting on the 700 block of Colfax Avenue.
Police authorities allege after the shooting, Gonzales went to Arizona, where he was taken into custody in Mesa on June 25. The Elmhurst Police Department and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office extradited Gonzales and investigators returned with him to DuPage County Friday afternoon.
“Violent, seemingly random crimes, such as alleged in this case, threaten the safety and security of the entire community, which can last for years if left unsolved,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement Saturday.
Gonzales’ next scheduled court appearance is Aug. 3 for arraignment.
