A Waukegan man was charged this week with first-degree murder after the 21-year-old man he planned to rob was shot as he tried to retrieve his stolen money, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Donterrance M. Nixon, 22, of the 600 block of Lenox Avenue, did not shoot Elliot Jones, who was found fatally shot May 29 near his home in unincorporated Gurnee, said Sgt. Christopher Covelli, a spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

He declined to say who shot Jones, citing the ongoing investigation. More than two people were in the car that went to Jones’ home that evening.

Covelli also declined to say whether the other people involved have been identified, and whether charges are pending.

Nixon was arrested at about 6 p.m. on June 8 after being identified as a “person of interest” in the investigation into what happened to Jones, according to the news release.

Nixon and Jones spent some time together during the day on May 29, but then parted ways that evening, according to the news release. They continued to communicate via electronic messages and Nixon offered to sell Jones marijuana.

He “really intended on robbing Jones,” according to the release.

About 9:50 p.m, Nixon arrived at Jones’ residence in the 36900 block of North Grandwood Drive in a car driven by another person, according to Covelli and the release.

Jones walked to where Nixon was seated, and Nixon robbed Jones of the cash he was going to use to buy the marijuana, according to the release.

The driver of the vehicle began to drive away as Jones was attempting to open the car door in an effort to retrieve his stolen money, according to the release. An occupant in the vehicle then shot Jones.

Nixon, who had an active arrest warrant for violating the sex offender registry, was arrested June 8 during a traffic stop at the intersection of Northfield Avenue and North McAree Road in Waukegan, according to therelease.

He appeared at an initial court hearing Thursday where his bail was set at $3 million. His next court date is scheduled for July 1.
