It looks like another big sugar storage dome is coming to Montgomery.

In 2016, United Sugars, a marketer of industrial sugar, built a sugar storage and transfer facility near Aucutt Road in Montgomery. The site included a large storage dome for sugar.

Officials from United Sugars appeared recently at an online Montgomery Village Board meeting saying they plan to build a second sugar storage dome at the site.

During construction of the first dome, company officials talked of wanting a second dome, but said they were taking their time.

“They always wanted a second one,” said Rich Young, community developer director for Montgomery.

The Village Board approved a resolution which allows the company to do predevelopment work for the second dome.

United Sugars brings refined beet sugar by train from plants in Montana, mainly during the prime processing period from November through January, officials said. Distribution usually begins in March, when the refined product is shipped out.

At present, only two other sugar domes are in operation, one in Hungary and the other in Honduras, company officials said.

United Sugars officials want to begin construction soon with an anticipated completion date for the second dome in December 2021.
