“It’s likely they’ll be postponed,” blabbed one source who added that a makeup date for the scheduled Feb. 28, 2021, ceremony had not yet been discussed.

In April, eligibility rules were amended to ease the requirement that all movies must have a seven-day run in a Los Angeles County theater to qualify for the Academy Awards.

An agreement was reached to allow films to be released on digital platforms, provided it had a planned theatrical release date and be made available to Academy Screening Room members within 60 days of its streaming debut.

“The Academy firmly believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theater,” said AMPAS president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson in late April. “Our commitment to that is unchanged and unwavering. Nevertheless, the historically tragic COVID-19 pandemic necessitates this temporary exception to our awards eligibility rules.”

Some notable Hollywood VIPs, including Steven Spielberg, have been vehemently critical of film-streaming companies like Netflix.

“I’m a firm believer that movie theaters need to be around forever,” said the two-time Best Director Academy Award winner in 2019, reported IndieWire.

Many film pundits believe “Roma,” the presumed Best Picture frontrunner of 2017, lost to “The Shape of Water” because of its association with Netflix. Similarly, Martin Scorsese’s mob drama ?The Irishman,” which was honored as 2019’s best film by both the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review, limped home empty-handed despite 10 nominations.
