Authorities suspect Khphruan Campbell in the death of Becky Crown, 38, who was found in a garbage can in an alley behind an apartment building in the 4400 block of Park Avenue in the New York City borough of the Bronx, a New York City police detective said.
Campbell, 37, was arrested in Chicago on an out-of-state warrant at his home in the 6600 block of North Campbell Avenue about 8:40 am. on Monday.
On Tuesday, during an internet-broadcast bail hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, Judge John Lyke Jr. ordered Campbell held without bail, and Campbell waived extradition to New York City, Cook County records show.
The attack happened April 20 about 8:30 a.m.
“Police responded to a 911 call of an unresponsive female,” the detective said. Crown, who lived about 7 miles away in the 300 block of West 94th Street in Manhattan, was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders, the detective said.
The cause of Crown’s death was ruled compression of the neck and chest, and it was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office, the detective said.
No other arrests have been made, and a motive was not clear.
