Instead of seeing fabulous kitchens in Hinsdale homes this year, people can share what makes their own kitchen wonderful to them.
Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk, a fundraiser in which people buy a pass to tour six or seven homes, scheduled for May 8, was cancelled due to the state’s coronavirus restrictions.
So the organizers came up with another idea to keep the spirit of the walk alive, said Emily Van Houtte, who is the event co-chairwoman with Liz Oliverio.
On May 8, everyone is invited to post a picture or video on Facebook or Instagram of what is special in their kitchen. It might be a tea kettle, the cabinet knobs, the backsplash or a favorite recipe.
“It could be a picture of the family around the table or the mess your home looks like because of learning at home,” Van Houtte said.
She plans to post a photo of the chandelier that hangs above her dining room table.

“Everyone is isolated at home, but this is a way we can come together.”
Post the photos with the hashtag #KitchenofHinsdaleCooks on May 8, then follow that hashtag “in order to tour the hearts of our homes,” the organizers suggest.
Van Houtte said they did not want to give virtual online tours of the seven kitchens that were supposed to be featured on this year’s walk, because they are hoping those homes will be on the 2021 kitchen walk.
This would have been the 15th year of the annual event, which raises money for the Hinsdale Historical Society and attracts as many as a thousand visitors. The society’s women’s board suggests people can support the work of the society, which maintains the Hinsdale History Museum, the historic Immanuel Hall and the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio in Hinsdale, by donating $15 for the 15th anniversary.
