Determined to provide online books, magazines and movies to local residents who are staying at home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, officials at the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District are offering temporary library cards, and have automatically renewed recently expired library cards, officials said Monday.

“It’s important to us that the community has access to our expansive digital library during this unprecedented time,” library spokeswoman Sarah Quish said in a statement.

In addition to bolstering the library’s digital resources, Quish said all library cards that have expired, from Sept. 1, 2019, onward, have been reactivated to allow patrons to access the online digital library, which includes eBooks, eAudiobooks, digital magazines and streaming media services.

Residents who don’t have a library card can apply online at: https://www.winnetkalibrary.org/temporary-library-card-application/ and receive a temporary library card number, Quish said.

Quish said despite both the main library in Winnetka and the Northfield branch being temporarily closed, the library is “virtually open and happy to help.”
