A gunman who was apparently aiming for a rival shot an eldelry man instead on Saturday afternoon on the West Side, police said.
Using a POD camera, police spotted the gunman firing shots across the street into a lot in the 5600 block of West Division Street in the city’s North Austin neighborhood about 1:20 p.m.
The only person the bullets hit was a 79-year-old man who was in an alley, police said.
“The victim had nothing to do with anything,” said Officer Anthony Spicuzza, a police spokesman.
“He was shot in his left arm and elbow,” said Chicago Fire Department Chief Curtis Hudson, who added paramedics took the man to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition had stabilized.
“It is unknown at this time who the intended target was, but, at this time, the victim does not appear to be the intended target,” police said in a media notification.
Earlier, Spicuzza said the victim was approached by “multiple unknown offenders” who shot him.
