Founded in 1`970 in the German city of Düsseldorf, Kraftwerk was the brainchild of Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider.
They worked in relative obscurity until their 1974 album and its title track, “Autobahn” (German for freeway), became international hits. Kraftwerk’s music helped lay the foundation for house, synth-pop, hip-hop, electro-pop, techno, dub-step and more.
“We are the link between the 1920s and 1980s,” Hütter said in 1979. “All change in society passes through a sympathetic collaboration with tape recorders, synthesisers and telephones. Our reality is an electronic reality.”

Meticulously constructed, Kraftwerk’s synthesizer- and computer-fueled music influenced everyone from David Bowie and Kanye West to Depeche Mode and Daft Punk. Jay-Z and New Order are among the many artists who have sampled Kraftwerk’s music for their own recordings, while the 2005 Coldplay song “Talk” was based on a motif from the German group’s 1981 song “Computer World.”
Schneider left Kraftwerk in 2009. He and Hütter received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2014, a year after first appearing on the ballot for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (The group has been nominated multiple times since then, but has yet to gain enough votes for induction.)
The current edition of Kraftwerk features Hütter, Fritz Hilpert, Falk Grieffenhagen and Henning Schmitz.
