Suspects in a Logan Square shooting Tuesday night led police on a chase, fired at the officers and then crashed their car after about 4 miles, according to authorities.

Police said gang-intelligence officers were conducting surveillance at a funeral home where a wake for a known gang member was taking place, when officers heard gunfire and saw someone running on Armitage Avenue with a handgun. He then got into a silver Honda Accord, and officers began to follow.

When the pursuit approached the 2500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, shots were fired at officers, police said.

No officers were injured and three people were taken into custody. The victim in the shooting, a 43-year-old man, who was found in the rear parking lot of the funeral home, and was taken in critical condition to Illinois Masonic Hospital.

He was hit several times about 8:35 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Armitage Avenue when shots were fired from a passing silver sedan, police said.

The pursuit ended in the 4400 block of North Western Avenue in the Ravenswood neighborhood when the car smashed into the wall of a bank, police said. No injuries were reported from the crash.

A handgun was recovered in the 2500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, which is also in Logan Square, according to a law enforcement source. Officers closed off a section of a construction site where the gun was found.

Chicago police worked the scene from the ground and by helicopter at Montrose and Western avenues near Welles Park.

At the scene where the man was shot, police taped off a parking lot behind a funeral home and knocked on the doors of nearby businesses and homes.
