Jeffrey S. Weiner Sr., a River Grove village trustee, a former school board member and a leader in many other local organizations, passed away on Dec. 18 at age 70.

Weiner was born in 1949 in River Grove. He attended Rhodes School, East Leyden High School, Triton College, Robert Morris College and Lewis University.

“Jeff understood the value of community,” his sister Claudia Beebe said. “He devoted his life to the River Grove community.”

Weiner served on the Board of Trustees in River Grove beginning in 1989 and was re-elected six times. He received a proclamation recognizing his retirement back in 2017 for the “highest degree of leadership, public service and commitment.”

He served on the River Grove School District 85.5 school board for six years. He was also the president of the River Grove Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Vice President of the Illinois Security Chiefs Association, Chairman of the St. Cyprian Parish Council, and an assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 144 based out of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

He served as the Chair of the Public Safety Committee and Recreation and License and Ordinance Committee. He organized and hosted the Wednesday Night at the Gazebo concert series.

Weiner was a member of the River Grove Beautification Committee, River Front Fest Committee, the Loyal Order of the Moose and editor of its newsletter and the River Grove Lions Club. He also dressed up as Santa Claus for Visit with Santa.

As for his career, he was retired from the baiduhai, where he had worked as a security supervisor.

He worked as a part-time police officer in River Grove from 1971 to 1989. While a part-time police officer, he sponsored the River Grove Junior Police program and the River Grove Police Explorer Post for the Boy Scouts of America.

Weiner had been married for 45 years to Christine D’Amico Weiner, who is a retired principal from St. Maria Goretti School.

Weiner is survived by his wife, his children Jeff Jr. (Juliet), Jennifer and Jessica and his grandson Mack.

Visitation was scheduled for St. Mother Theodore Guerin Parish (St. Cyprian) on Dec. 23 at 10 a.m., with Mass to follow at 11 a.m. Weiner was to be buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
