One driver was in critical condition after being flown to a hospital after his vehicle crossed the median on Route 12 Wednesday afternoon and struck a semi-truck head-on in North Barrington.

The accident occurred around 12:45 P.M. near Timberlake Road, where a 2003 Mercedes-Benz SUV driven by a 44-year-old Palatine man heading north crossed the grassy median for unknown reasons and struck the semi-truck head-on, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office release.

The driver of the 1995 Freightliner truck and trailer, a 52-year-old from Elgin, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The impact caused the Mercedes-Benz to roll into the ditch on the west side of Route 12, according to the release.

Flight For Life flew the Palatine man to Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, where he was in critical condition. The accident closed both lanes of Route 12 for more than three hours, the release said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit is investigating the crash.
