The family of a man who died after he crashed his Tesla Model S car filed a wrongful death lawsuit this month alleging that the death was caused by the auto’s futuristic door handles, which prevented a cop from reaching him.
Omar Awan, a 48-year-old anesthesiologist, lost control of the blue sedan in February, sending it across a South Florida road and into a palm tree, according to The Washington Post.
The suit, filed in Broward County on Oct. 10, said flames “engulfed the car and burned Dr. Awan beyond recognition — all because the Model S has inaccessible door handles, no other way to open the doors, and an unreasonably dangerous fire risk.”
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Another family filed a suit this month in San Jose, Calif., blaming a battery explosion for the death of an 18-year-old who smashed a Model S into a concrete wall in an “entirely survivable” crash, according to Bloomberg.
