When the Cubs made the decision to cut ties with Joe Maddon, they were separating from one of the best managers in Cubs history and someone who may be Hall of Fame bound.
Maddon’s managerial resume stands out among the Cubs’ best. He has the fifth-most wins of any Cubs manager. He has managed in more postseason games than any other Cubs manager by far, though this statistic is somewhat skewed by the increased number of postseason series in the modern game.
Maddon’s career stats as manager also compare favorably to the rest of the league. Maddon is No. 40 among all-time managers with 1,252 wins. Among the 39 managers with more wins, 60% are in the Hall of Fame. Among those with at least 315 wins, only five active managers have a better winning percentage than Maddon: Aaron Boone, Dave Roberts, Alex Cora, A.J. Hinch and Terry Francona. And Maddon’s career winning percentage compares favorably with Hall of Fame managers, including Joe Torre and Tony La Russa.
