Thunderstorms and lightning postponed but did not cancel Hinsdale Central’s homecoming game, nor did rain and cold spoil the parade Saturday morning.
The varsity football game was rescheduled for Saturday afternoon, when Central beat Downers Grove North 35-26.
Central’s pep rally at a school assembly Friday afternoon gave a clue the Red Devils were ready to fight. It included silly games, skits by members of the homecoming court and performances by the cheerleaders and pom teams.

But what had the audience howling with surprise and laughter was the determination and fight the players showed in musical chairs.
The game was made more challenging by blindfolding the contestants and requiring they dance until the music stopped. The contestants, who included school staff as well as students, then staggered or crawled around the gymnasium looking for an available chair.

Other students did not help by pulling the chairs just out of reach of the groping contestants.
When more than one person found a chair, neither relinquished it easily. Freshman Katie Cosentino fought valiantly for a chair, before another student ultimately sat on it and claimed it.
The battle between Central activities director Dan Jones and another student turned into a wrestling match at center court and lasted even longer. No injuries were reported.
Central friends and families showed similar determination to have fun Saturday morning, turning out with umbrellas and ponchos to watch Central’s homecoming court, band and floats parade in the rain from the high school through downtown Hinsdale and back before the homecoming football game.

The start time, originally scheduled for Friday, was rescheduled because of lightning.

Central students celebrated the team’s win at the homecoming dance Saturday evening, where McKenna Revord and Patrick Hsiao were crowned the 2019 queen and king.
